The size of the class depends largely on the location. There is ample time for individual guidance and questions. Usually classes will have between 8 and 18 participants.
While you will have the skill-set to give a massage you will need to check the legal situation where you want to practice massage as a business. Requirements vary widely. Licenses are dispensed by the city (i.e. California) or State (i.e. Hawaii) in which you plan to practice and usually require certification. Some massage therapists may also be allowed to practice massage under the license of a medical professional - such as a chiropractor - and need not have their own license. If this is the beginning of your career you will naturally want to explore those techniques you are attracted to.
A license means that a massage therapist has met the requirements and paid the fee to legally practice massage in that area. In some places massage is regulated by the state, elsewhere the town or municipality regulates. Some places have no licensing requirements at all. Certification means that the therapist has successfully passed a specific course or test and has been granted a certificate to bear out that fact. This may range from courses in pregnancy massage, to different modalities like Rolfing or Watsu®. There is also a written national certification test for massage therapists. Currently there is no national license. National certification can be acquired by successfully passing a national test.
You will be able to start giving massages directly after the course. You might want to practice some more with friends and relatives and of course you will have to check which laws apply if you want to work professionally. We will touch on subjects such as marketing and business practice during the course.
You will need to be in good health. Massage is a physical activity that requires a certain amount of exertion. You do not need to be strong or tall to do massage. Over time your body will adjust however it needs to.
You will always be able to undress to your level of comfort. Partial disrobing is required. We create a very safe space in which to prepare for and practice massage and great attention is given to proper draping and appropriate touch.
We supply everything you need for the training. We suggest clothing you can easily move in and a personal water-bottle.
Every participant will receive a manual with the course content as well as additional interesting information.
Here is a sample schedule. It is subject to change. All participants will receive a schedule at the opening circle.
Every experience is unique and returning students can experience another level of flow and refinement and are very welcome. The intensive can be audited for half the tuition.
... when other schools require at least 6 months or even 2 years?
1. We teach the essence of what it takes to be an excellent massage therapist. We leave it up to you to pursue the areas you are particularly interested in on your own or at qualified institutions. We are not a school and we encourage continuing your education by visiting other courses.
2. We teach a combination of the best techniques from many different styles of massage. Strokes are not taught isolated. Basic and advanced strokes are integrated in an uninterrupted flow.
3. There is very little passive listening time compared with the time spent with hands-on experience. This learning style emphasizes activating the motoric memory rather than an intellectual approach.
Every participant accomplishes the massage routine. Because of the hands-on approach the routine makes it's way directly into the subconscious mind where activities such as driving a car, or riding a bicycle are stored. There is no memorizing or tedious study involved. Is there a test at the end? At the end of each course we celebrate by inviting "clients" in to receive a massage from TFTH students. We view this as your initiation to your own practice.
